Wings in Flight
Blériot was a French aviator, inventor and engineer.
He developed the first acetylene headlamps for automobiles and established a profitable business manufacturing them.
In 1909, he became famous for making the first flight across the English Channel, winning the prize of £1,000 offered by the Daily Mail newspaper.
Blériot was also the first to make a working, powered, piloted monoplane and is also the founder of a successful aircraft manufacturing company.
Blériot began his obsession with aviation when he visited a local exhibition and saw Clement Ader's early, bat-wing shaped plane.
Inspired by what he saw, he began to build, test, and crash numerous planes of his own over the next nine years.
Rather than following one design for his planes, Blériot worked trial after error - first with gliders, then box-kite biplanes, and finally with monoplanes.
